Have you taken your fish oil this morning?

Fish oil is one of the most important supplements you can make use of, which is great news, because it’s also one of the most inexpensive. Sure, your post-workout shake is going to deliver high quality protein to your muscles just when they need it most, and yes, your multivitamin is rounding out your daily nutritional intake, but fish oil offers so much more.

First and foremost, fish oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which your body can’t manufacture itself, and which it needs for optimal function. This alone is reason enough to take your daily dose, after all, optimal function means better training, which means more results, which is what we want. But that’s not where it ends. When you take fish oil, one of the things your body uses it for is to build the outside lipid layer of the cells. Using fish oil for this rather than other fats increases insulin sensitivity, which if you’ve read anything I’ve written here previously you will know is key to fat loss.

Studies have also indicated a reduction in cortisol levels amongst people who use fish oil. Cortisol is a stress hormone which degrades muscle tissue, leads to fat gain, can impact on your sleep, and makes you really cranky at home, at work, out in public, and on the car journeys between those places. We don’t want any of those things.

It gets better. I just told you that it reduces cortisol, which causes muscle degradation, but it doesn’t end there. Fish oil actively improves protein synthesis, which assists with muscle building. Here’s a fun fact: The National Collegiate Athletics Association in America was so taken with the anabolic effects of fish oil that they banned its distribution to scholarship athletes, reasoning that it gave the wealthier institutions, which could afford to supplement, an unfair advantage.

How do you feel about muscle soreness the day after training? Sure, I like to know I’ve had a solid session, but what if you could not only see greater results for your training, but also feel less pain the following day? Once again, fish oil’s what you need. It reduces inflammation, and your body doesn’t want inflammation. Why doesn’t it want inflammation? When your muscle tissue isn’t inflamed, you see greater muscle building and all-round cellular health, you speed the removal of toxins from your system without ever going near a ridiculous and over-priced tea, you get leaner and you feel great.

You still need to be eating a well balanced diet, there’s no supplement in the world that can adequately compensate for not eating right. Eat plenty of vegetables, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds, meat and poultry, fats from high quality oils and avocados. Avoid highly processed vegetable oils, which contain elevated levels of Omega-6 fats. These can impact on the effectiveness of Omega-3s if over-consumed, or consumed in the wrong ratios, and you’re getting plenty of them from other dietary sources. But all the time you’re eating that carefully balanced diet?
